The Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) is set to conduct the long pending Performance Review meeting on the first day of 2023, i.e. Sunday, January 1st. The review meeting will be conducted in Mumbai and will be attended by top administrators of BCCI including President Roger Binny and Secretary Jay Shah, skipper Rohit Sharma, members of support staff, i.e head coach Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, and former chief of selection committee Chetan Sharma.
According to top sources, the BCCI will likely seek explanations from Rohit, Dravid, and Chetan Sharma regarding India’s back-to-back disappointing performance at the T-20 World Cup in Australia and the Bangladesh ODI series. India had also failed to qualify for the finals of the Asia Cup.
India is set to host Sri Lanka for a T20I series starting on January 3 in Mumbai. In view of the first series of 2023, BCCI will conduct a thorough performance review and take some major decisions. Hardik Pandya has already been announced as the skipper of the T-20I side whereas Rohit continues to lead the ODI team.
A number of agendas have been announced ahead of the BCCI Performance Review meeting. Some of them are as follows:
- Explanation of T20 World Cup Defeat
The 1st Agenda of the Performance Review will be an explanation of India’s demeaning stint at the T-20 World Cup, Asia Cup, and the Bangladesh ODI series from Captain Rohit Sharma, Coach Rahul Dravid, and former Chairman of the Selection Committee Chetan Sharma.
- Injuries Spate
Injury concerns have been looming over the Indian contingent with veteran stars Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja being out for a brief period. BCCI will seek an explanation from National Cricket Academy Chief VVS Laxman regarding the workload management and rehabilitation program.
3. Future Captaincy
BCCI will also take the views of Rohit, Dravid, and Laxman over India’s future captaincy. Top officials have already indicated that they wish Rohit to continue to lead India in the 2023 World Cup and Tests whereas they are willing to hand over the T-20I captaincy to Hardik Pandya.
4. Seniors Phasing Out
The phasing out of seniors from the shortest T-20I format will also be a major point of discussion in the BCCI Performance Review Meeting as the World Governing Body is aiming to build a young and explosive squad for the format. Skipper Sharma, Kohli, Shami, Bhuvaneshwar, Ashwin, and Karthik are in the penultimate phase of their career and will likely be phased out of the T-20I team.
5. Specialist T20I Coach
To ensure proper workload management and specialized coaching for each format of the game, BCCI is set to roll out a distinct coach for the T-20I format whereas Rahul Dravid will continue to be the Head Coach for ODI and Tests.
