India’s Captain Rohit Sharma has cleared the air on the future of his T20I Career ahead of the first ODI against Sri Lanka. He said that he has not decided to give up on his T20I career & is willing to play the shortest format of cricket.
India’s Captain Rohit Sharma sustained a thumb injury during India’s second ODI against Bangladesh which ruled him out of the two-match Test Series followed by the Sri Lanka T20I series. During his absence, Hardik Pandya led India’s T20I squad in the Sri Lanka T20I series. With Hardik leading the Indian team frequently in the T20I series including the latest T20I series against Sri Lanka, there were speculations that Rohit would retire from the T20I format & will lead in ODI & Test format only. But Rohit’s statement ahead of the first ODI against Sri Lanka has rested all the speculations.
“Firstly it’s not possible to play back-to-back fixtures. You need to give them enough break. I definitely fall in that category as well. We have three T20Is against New Zealand & we will see what will happen after IPL. I have not at all decided to give up the format,” Rohit said in a pre-match press conference on Monday.
India will lock horns with Sri Lanka in three-match ODI series beginning on January 10 in Guwahati. The ODIs will be held in Guwahati, Kolkata & Trivandrum on January 10, 12 & 15. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah who was going to join India’s ODI squad has been ruled out of the ODI series as the board has decided to provide him enough time to recover fully before returning back to action.
India’s senior players Virat Kohli, KL Rahul & Shreyas Iyer too will return to the squad for the ODI series against Sri Lanka. The trio was rested for the T20I series which Men in Blue won by 2-1 under the leadership of Hardik Pandya.
