SA20: MI Cape Town Signs Jofra Archer as Wildcard Player

It seems like the return of England’s star pacer Jofra Archer seems not too far as Mumbai Indians have signed the prolific pacer for the SA20 League. The five-time IPL Champions Mumbai Indians who own the MI Cape Town team in the SA20 league have signed Archer as a wildcard player. Notably, the star player will be available for the inaugural edition of SA20 to be played from January 10 to February 11.

“MI Cape Town announces the signing of Jofra Archer as their SA20 wildcard player ahead of the inaugural season of SA20,” the franchise said in a statement on Wednesday (November 23). On the other hand, a spokesperson of the ECB has confirmed that  ECB has given the NOC to Archer to feature in SA20. The right-arm fast bowler has been out of action since July 2021 due to his gruesome elbow injury.

The prolific right-arm pacer has been signed by the franchise under the SA20 league’s new Wildcard rule. As per the reports, his signing amount is more than the base price of $ 2 million. However, MI has maintained silence over the remuneration offered to Archer. Notably, he was signed for 8 crores by Mumbai Indians during IPL 2022 Mega auction.

Jofra Archer is planning to make a powerful comeback to International Cricket

Archer is leaving no stone unturned to make a comeback to International Cricket. He is currently in the UAE with the England Lions team where he is rehabilitating under a group of ECB Coaches. Several videos of Archer bowling full-length paceful deliveries have gone viral on social media. And as per the reports, Archer’s bowling looks promising as he has troubled some good batters with his fiery pace during a friendly fixture in Abu Dhabi.

Though ECB has provided Archer with a NOC to feature in SA20 they are still closely monitoring his recovery. The board has drawn a roadmap for his full-fledged return to the International arena & is actively involved in getting Jofra Archer back in the groove.

“He’ll play a number of games on his return to competitive cricket,” the ECB spokesman said.

The right-arm pacer is likely to feature in three-match ODI series against South Africa to be played from January 27 to February 1 in South Africa.
