India hailed a glorious victory in 2011 by winning the World Cup and making the whole nation proud. Reliving old memories Sachin Tendulkar recalled that his suggestion to MS Dhoni to go ahead of Yuvraj Singh became an important masterstroke for India which helped team India to win the World Cup Finals in the year 2011.
After losing the crucial wickets of Virendra Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar in the target of 274 runs against Sri Lanka in the 2011 World Cup final, India steadied their ship through a remarkable partnership between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir. But soon Virat Kohli got out in the crucial 22nd wicket and everyone expected that the talented and in-form batsman Yuvraj Singh will walk out to bat. But a great surprise was awaiting India fans when the captain MS. Dhoni came out to bat in the middle instead of Yuvraj Singh. The wicketkeeper-batsman Dhoni had not shown good performance in the journey of reaching the World Cup Finals and the decision to go before Yuvraj Singh seemed inappropriate at that time.
But the decision turned out to be a masterstroke and MS. Dhoni smashed 91 runs in just 79 deliveries to complement Gambhir’s 97 runs and helped India to lift the World Cup trophy for the second time in the history.
“During 2011 the partnership between Gautam and Virat was flourishing & we wanted to be ahead of the opposition team and that’s when I told Viru that if a left-hand (Gautam) gets out now then a left-hander batsman (Yuvi) should go for batting and if the right-hand batsman (Virat) gets out, then right-hand batsman (Dhoni) should go in. Yuvraj was in tremendous form but Sri-lanka has two off-spinners in the bowling and so I thought a strategy change will work”, Tendulkar said.
“And the thought of Tendulkar was right. The left-right combination was to be continued further. The change in strategy has affected the performance of Sri-Lankans”, Sehwag added.
“Gautam was batting brilliantly and Dhoni could have kept rotating the strike, so I told Viru, ‘tu overs ke beech me sirf ye baat bahar jaake MS ko bol aur next over shuru honese Pehle waps Aaja. Main yahan se hilnewala nahin hoon”, added Tendulkar. He was not ready to move from his place because just like the TV spectators he didn’t choose to move from their spot when team India was doing well.
“I asked MS to consider this strategy. MS then went to Gary who was sitting outside. Then Gary came in an all four were talking about it. Gary too agreed to this strategy and it was the right thing to counter-attack the Sri-Lanka team. MS also agreed and promoted himself up the order”, Tendulkar added.
The decision proved a boon to India and India beat Sri-Lanka by six wickets with more than an over left to end the game.
This incident proved that experience and team-work has led team India to win the title of World Cup 2011. Let’s hope that we will be able to witness team India winning the upcoming T20 World Cup and make the whole nation proud!
