T20 World Cup 2021: West Indies knocked out Bangladesh by sealing a Stunning three runs win

T20 World Cup 2021: West Indies Knocked out Bangladesh by sealing a comprehensive three runs win

WI vs BAN: Defending Champions West Indies finally proved their worth by knocking out Bangaldesh from the T20 World Cup 2021 by registering a narrow three runs win today at the grounds of Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Sent in to bat first, West Indies registered 142 runs for 7 wickets with Nicholas Pooran scoring 40 off 22 balls in an innings studded with four sixes & one four. The debutant Roston Chase was another chief contributor with the bat who registered 39 runs.

In response to West Indies 142 runs target, the Tigers could score just 139 for five wickets in 20 overs. West Indies bowlers displayed a spell-bounding bowling performance to restrict Bangladesh in their chase of 142 runs.

By losing all three matches of the Super 12s stage, Bangladesh is finally out of the marquee event. On the other hand, by defeating Bangladesh with a narrow margin of three runs, West Indies hopes to qualify for the semifinals is still alive. However, they need to win all their remaining fixtures if they want to qualify for the knockout stage.

Bangladesh began their chase on a poor note by losing their openers Mohammad Naim (17) and Shakib Al Hasan (9) in the first six overs. But Bangladesh tried to make a comeback into the clash with batter Liton das scoring 44 runs off 43 balls. Just like Bangladesh, West Indies were sloppy in the field & missed three major run-out opportunities. With 50 runs required off the last six overs with six wickets in hand, Captain Mahmudullah & das were in full control of their chase converting singles into doubles while hitting boundaries regularly. Dwayne Bravo (1/36) produced a conducive 17th over, giving away just three runs.

In the first ball of the second last over, Bravo was hit for a six by Mahmudullah but the all-rounder proved his mettle by getting rid of Litton Das in his final delivery. Requiring just 13 urns off the last over, Mahmudllah failed to score a boundary thanks to the West Indies’ restricted bowling in the death overs. But Andre Russell (1-29) bowled a beautiful delivery full outside the off stump, without giving Mahmudullah any opportunity to score runs & thereby closing all doors for Bangladesh’s win.

Nicholas Pooran & Roston Chase’s heroics with the bat helped Windies to register 142 runs in 20 overs

Earlier batting first, Nicholas Pooran smashed four sixes & a four while chase (39) was the major run-scorers for the Windies squad. Capitalizing on West Indies’ poor performance against spin, Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah handed the ball to off-spinner Mahedi Hasan (2/27) to lead the bowling attack.

After a few overs of disappointment, in the fifth over the spin attack give returns with Mehidy Hassan scalping the big wicket of Chris Gayle (4) as Bangladesh gave away just 29 runs while picking two wickets in the Powerplay. In his next over, right after he put down Chase off his bowling, Hasan snared Shimron Hetmyer’s (9) wicket. Kieron Pollard (14 not out) and Chase tried to repair the innings before the skipper retired ill in the 13th over.

The reason behind Pollard walking away at that stage was not clear but he returned in the final over of the match to hit a last-ball six after seven batsmen of his side were removed off the field. In the very next ball, Andre Russell (0) was run out without facing a ball as things went from bad to worse for the West Indies.

Then West Indies got the benefit of Bangladesh’s poor fielding as Chase was dropped again by Hasan at the deep mid-wicket before Bangaldesh missed another stumping opportunity against Pooran. The momentum slightly changed in the West Indies’ favor as Chase and Pooran plundered 14 runs off the 15th over.

Nicholas Pooran continued the onslaught with the bat as he hammered Shakib Al Hasan for back-to-back sixes. Jason Holder too pitched in with an unbeaten five-ball 15. Due to Bangladesh’s poor fielding skills, the Windies could register a decent total of 142 runs.
