WTC Final, Day 5: Shami & Ishant strikes to put Indian into a commanding position after the Lunch Break

WTC Final

It was truly a game of patience in the first session of Day 5 in the ongoing WTC final between India & New Zealand. But after the lunch break, it was undoubtedly India’s session as Mohammed Shami scalped two wickets while Ishant Sharma scalped one wicket to put India on top by reducing the black Caps to 135/5.

However, the plus point for New Zealand’s squad is that their captain Kane Williamson is present on the crease to lead their innings. Williamson is batting on 19 runs off 112 balls & seems in no hurry to take on the lethal Indian bowlers. Supporting Williamson is Colin de Grandhomme. With an episode of constant drizzle delaying the start of the day by an hour, the Indian bowlers had conditions tailor-made for them. But Ross Taylor & Williamson adopted a steady batting approach & made sure to miss good balls & playing the ones which are in line with the stumps.

The first half an hour of the game saw just five-run brought on board which showed the great determination in both Taylor & Williamson. However, Indian bowlers were also not going to give up so easily. Jasprit Bumrah could ball better in the given conditions, while Shami & Ishant bowled at perfect lengths to mount pressure on New Zealand’s batsmen. And finally, Shami got the much-needed breakthrough as he compelled Taylor to hit a drive shot which ended up with Shubman Gill taking a smart diving catch. With Shami removing Taylor, Henry Nicholls joined Williamson to lead their innings.

Ishant’s hard work paid off as he got the edge of Nicholls bat that ended with Rohit Sharma taking a brilliant catch in the slip cordon. Mohammed Shami struck again & send BJ Watling back to the pavilion. The lunch break came just as a blessing for the Indian bowlers as they look in great form & ready to go for the kill. The gameplay was washed off on the first & fourth day & thus the WTC final is all set to go into the reserve day with both the teams eyeing to win the WTC title on the line.

Brief Scores: India 217, New Zealand 135/5 (Devon Conway 54, Ishant Sharma 2/27, Mohammed Shami 2/31)
