Shaheen Afridi’s knee trouble revived during T20 World Cup 2022 Final
Shaheen Afridi is also undergoing rehabilitation for his knee injury which got revived during Pakistan’s fixture against England in the T20 World Cup 2022 final at the MCG. During the ENG vs PAK final fixture, Afridi had to walk off the field due to pain & discomfort in his knee after taking a difficult catch to dismiss Harry Brook. As he slid low from the long-off to hold on he was seen in pain & immediately was taken off-field by Pakistan’s physio & doctor. However, he returned back after an over & tried to bowl a delivery but couldn’t do so & walked back to the dressing room. Pakistan was without their star bowler at a crucial moment which cost them the finals. In total Afridi was able to bowl just 2.21 overs.
However, last week PCB gave an update on his injury confirming that there were no signs of injury following his scan reports. Afridi also said that the discomfort was due to a forced flexion while landing for taking a catch & thus has been advised a two-week rehab. It was earlier reported that Afridi is likely to miss their home Test series against England & New Zealand slated for the December-January window. But PCB has confirmed that his return to cricket is dependent on the successful completion of his rehabilitation program & go-to signals by the medical staff.
Shaheen Afridi Injury surfaced back in July during Pakistan tour of Sri Lanka
Afridi’s knee injury surfaced back in July when Pakistan was touring Sri Lanka. But he underwent rehab on the tour itself & was a part of the team. However, during the Asia Cup 2022 in UAE during the August-September window Afridi pulled out of the Pakistan Squad & was sent to London for further assessment of his injury. Shaheen Afridi has completed his rehabilitation & returned to Pakistan’s squad ahead of T20 World Cup 2022 & displayed good form during the league stage before getting injured again during the finals.
Afridi’s unavailability in the home Test series could prove costly for the team as they are still in contention for a place in the WTC Final 2021-23 to be held in England next June. Pakistan along with Sri Lanka, India & West Indies have percentages between 50 & 53.33. They currently occupy the fifth position in the WTC 2021-2023 Points table. Pakistan will lock horns with England in three-match Test series beginning on December 1, followed by New Zealand series comprising two Tests & three ODIs beginning on December 1.
