Former Pakistan skipper and all-rounder Shahid Afridi has been appointed as the interim Chief Selector of the men’s senior cricket team. Afridi is set to lead the three-member committee that also consists of veteran Pakistani paceman Abdul Razzaq and Rao Iftikhar Anjum.
Afridi & Co. will be delegated an integral responsibility ahead of their appointment. They will be responsible for selecting Pakistan’s Test squad for the upcoming historic home Test series against the Blackcaps.
Along with the crucial task of squad selection, the three-member committee will also initiate a thorough review of the Test squad against England that was announced by a previously appointed committee led by Mohammed Wasim. Pakistan suffered a humiliating series of whitewash against England in one of the most thumping defeats in the history of test cricket.
Addressing the media, Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board’s Management Committee Najam Sethi expressed utmost confidence in Afridi. He stated that Afridi is one of the most experienced Pakistani cricketers and his flourishing 20 years of the cricketing journey will see some riveting decisions coming ahead in the selection of the squad.
Sethi steps up as Pakistan’s Chief of Management Committee
Sethi was recently announced as the Chief of PCB’s Management Committee. The newly elected Management Committee was sworn in on Thursday and disarmed all the previously appointed committees by the earlier panel in 2019.
Shahid Afridi was also named to the Management Committee. However, the T-20 World Cup-winning captain opted out of the same stating that he also runs a charitable foundation and will not be able to provide justice and work with transparency. Afridi is delighted by his nomination as the chief selector and asserted that he will work in the utmost capable manner and aim to escort the best talents across the country.
Meanwhile, Afridi’s counterpart Abdul Razzaq has been active in cricket administration as he recently resigned from his position as the head coach of the Central Punjab domestic team. Razzaq also has terrific experience and will likely do justice to his position. Rao Iftikhar Anjum has also remained active in Pakistan’s cricket administration field and will be a vital support to the two ace players.
