Indian Premier League franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad bid adieu to their skipper Kane Williamson ahead of the IPL 2023 auction. With IPL 2023 auction scheduled on December 23, 2022, franchises are on their way to submit their retentions to BCCI.
Kane was a part of the franchise for the last eight years. The Kiwi skipper captained Sunrisers since 2021 after David Warner was sacked by the team over poor form. Kane scored 2101 runs in 76 matches for the Sunrisers. In the previous season, the franchise spent INR 14 crore to retain Kane- the highest price paid to retain an overseas player in the IPL. Now with Kane released, the team has an extra INR 14 crore in the purse.
Kane Williamson had a disappointing season with the bat, he managed to score 216 runs off 13 innings at an average of 93.50. The Orange Army experienced a disappointing 2022 campaign where the team finished eighth on the table winning only 6 out of 14 games. The team will be looking for a new captain in upcoming auctions.
Evidently, SRH is rebuilding the team as they also released Nicholas Pooran from the line-up over an underwhelming 2022 season. Former SRH coach Tom Moody hinted at the proper use of 14 crores over the release of Kane from the team. The Kiwi is still struggling with his form after a terrible elbow injury.
On interim leadership, Kane Williamson guided the team to finals in 2018 where he scored 735 runs at a strike rate of 142 across the season.
The franchise has decided to continue with Brian Lara as its head coach. With full faith in the coaching staff, Dale Steyn and Hemang Badani will continue to be a part of the franchise. Tom Moody has been let go from his contract. Finally, SRH would go into the IPL 2023 auction with INR 42.25 crores in their hand.
