Yuvraj Singh was asked about who was MS. Dhoni’s favorite player in the Indian Cricket team Squad to which Yuvraj Singh replied Suresh Raina. It is common for any captain to have a favorite player and when it comes to Mahindra Singh Dhoni it was Suresh Raina who enjoyed strong backing from the former Indian Captain Mahindra Singh Dhoni, feels former star batsman Yuvraj Singh.
One of India’s greatest limited-overs cricketers Yuvraj Singh remembered how Dhoni faced the selection dilemma when he had to choose between two outstanding cricketers i.e Yusuf Pathan and Suresh Raina in the XI players squad during the 2011 World Cup.
“Suresh Raina had a lot of support as MS used to back him. Every captain of a team has a favorite player and I think Mahi really backed Suresh Raina during his tenure”, Yuvraj Singh told media. Whereas all the three players made the XI playing squad although Yusuf Pathan was dropping from playing XI in the mid-tournament with Yuvraj Singh playing a pivotal role in helping India to win the title.
“Yusuf Pathan was performing well during 2011 World Cup time and even I was playing well and was fetching wickets and Raina was not in a good format that time”, Yuvraj Singh Recalled. “They did not have a left-arm spinner at that time and I was fetching wickets so they didn’t have any choice rather than keeping me in the squad”, Yuvraj Singh added.
The stunning batsmen also revealed questions which were raised over the bat he used to hit Stuart broad for six sixes in an over during the 2007 T20 World Cup, which led the referee to check the willow. “The Australian coach at that time came to me and asked that is there any fiber behind my bat and asked if it was legal, has the referee checked it? So I told him to get it checked”. “Even Adam Gilchrist asked me who made our bats. And match referee also checked my bat. But honestly, that bat was very special for me. I have never played with a bat like that. That bat and the 2011 World cup bat were very special for me”.
When asked about his favorite captain than Yuvraj Singh picked up the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly as his favorite captain who supported him a lot during his tenure. Yuvraj Singh was extraordinarily praising Sourav Ganguly for nurturing young talent and picked the BCCI President as his favorite captain. “Dada would be my favorite Captain. He supported me a lot the most I can say that. We were young also, so he nurtured our talent”, Yuvraj Singh added.
