The number of fixtures in the ongoing T20 WC 2022 getting called off due to rain has increased. Today both the fixtures of Group 1 at the MCG were abandoned due to rain. Earlier, AFG vs IRE fixture & then England vs Australia match were abandoned due to rain. Fans who were eagerly waiting for the fierce clash between arch-rivals England & Australia got sad as they didn’t get the chance of witnessing one of the biggest clashes on the grounds of iconic MCG.
After two matches being called off on Friday, Group 1 Points Table looks open with three teams likely to end up with seven points in their kitty. New Zealand, England, Ireland & Australia bag three points. New Zealand is placed on top of the table with superior NRR while Australia is lagging at the fourth spot on the Points table with an NRR of -1.555.
Hosts Australia was coming into this clash on the back of a thumping win against Sri Lanka. They had initially suffered a defeat at the hands of New Zealand. However, they bounced back & display a great show to register seven wickets win over Sri Lanka. They were hoping to improve their NRR on the Points table by outclassing England in today’s clash. However, rain played a spoilsport & England vs Australia match got abandoned with both the teams settling with one point each.
On the other hand, England kickstarted their campaign on a winning note but failed to maintain their winning run after suffering a defeat at the hands of Ireland. They fell 5 runs short of the target as per the DLS method. They perceived today’s match as an opportunity to improve their NRR & thereby position at the Points Table. Four teams look like top contenders for the Playoff stage with three points in their kitty. The remaining clashes will determine who will march into the playoff stage.
