T20 World Cup 2022: Zimbabwe appoints Steve Kirby as Bowling Coach

Zimbabwe signs in Steve Kirby as their new bowling coach ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 next month. Kirby had last served as the bowling coach at Somerset one of the teams he has played for. Meanwhile, Kirby has also worked with current Zimbabwe Head Coach, Dave Houghton at Derbyshire club.

“I’ve got aspirations to be the very best coach that I can be, and international cricket is something that I really want to be involved with,” Steve Kirby was quoted as saying in a Zimbabwe Cricket statement.

I’ve worked really well with Dave Houghton previously when we were at Derbyshire and when this position presented itself, I felt that I couldn’t turn it down,” added to his statement.

A Glimpse of Steve Kirby Illustrious Career

Steve Kirby has enjoyed a celebrated career in Couty Cricket with England as a pacer featuring in 348 matches across formats. He has proved his mettle in 167 first-class, 104 List A, and 77 T20 matches. Kirby won the County Championship with Yorkshire club & has also represented Gloucestershire, Leicestershire, and MCC. During his bowling career with Somerset club, Steve Kirby had scalped 572 first-class wickets at 28.74, 142 in List A at 27.90, and 83 wickets in T20s with an economy rate of 7.56.

Steve Kirby faced certain downfalls in his career after being penalized for ball tampering during his tenure with Gloucestershire. After the end of his playing career, Kirby then took up a coaching role with Somerset Club where he served as a bowling coach.

“We are delighted to confirm Steve as our Bowling Coach for the senior men’s team,” Zimbabwe director of cricket Hamilton Masakadza said.

“He has done incredibly well as a player and coach in county cricket over the years and, as we seek to continue strengthening all facets of our game and improving our performances at the highest level, we count ourselves privileged and fortunate to have him as part of our technical set-up,” he added to her statement.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe will play in the first round of the T20 World Cup 2022 along with Ireland, West Indies, and Scotland in Group B. They will begin their campaign against Ireland on October 17 in Hobart after playing warm-up games against Sri Lanka and Namibia in Melbourne.
