T20 World Cup: Andrew McDonald fears more COVID-19 Cases in Australia's Squad

Australia’s head Coach Andrew McDonald fears more COVID-19 cases in their T20 World Cup squad after their top players Adam Zampa & Matthew Wade contracted COVID-19 in the middle of the marquee event.

Australia’s wicket-keeper batter Wade is the second Australian cricketer after Adam Zampa who tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday evening. However, to everyone’s surprise, Wade recovered early & was available for selection for their fixture against England on Friday which was washed out. On the other hand, Zampa is still in rehabilitation & is yet to recover fully from COVID-19.

After Australia’s match against England was abandoned, Andrew McDonald spoke about the fixture & Matthew Wade’s condition.

“That’s highly possible (more COVID cases) really the way it’s gone. I suppose the strong point around that was that Matthew Wade was going to play tonight (Friday). So each individual is affected differently by the virus,” McDonald said after their fixture against England was called off due to persistent rains.

Earlier Adam Zampa tested positive for COVID-19 & was going to miss Australia’s fixture against Sri Lanka on Tuesday which the hosts won by seven wickets.

Speaking about Zampa’s condition McDonald said that Zampa has not recovered completely & management had to monitor whether he is completely fit to play the game against England or not. Whereas Wade on the other hand responded differently by showing fewer symptoms & was ready to play in tonight’s fixture.

“(Zampa) Had to be isolated from the group. That was probably the only thing where we had to communicate separately from him, which is a little bit unique. But yeah, it’s a real possibility for all teams,” Andrew McDonald added to his statement

Ireland’s George Dockrell tested positive for COVID-19

Not only Australian players but also Ireland players had suffered the brunt of COVID-19. Ireland’s Geroge Dockrell is the other cricketer who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the ongoing T20 World Cup. However, he recovered & took the field during their clash against Sri Lanka on Sunday. What came as a relief for players & cricket boards is that the Australian Government has lifted mandatory isolation requirements for COVID-19-positive cases.
