Defending Champions, Southern brave signed Australian-born seamer, Michael Hogan for the Hundred 2022 in the wildcard draft on Thursday morning. Earlier in December, Hogan announced that this would be his final season as a professional Cricketer before his retirement but withdrew from his decision after displaying impressive performances in the Vitality T20 Blast for Glamorgan this season, scalping 20 wickets in 11 matches while bowling in the powerplay and at the death overs.
The chances of Hogan featuring in the Playing XI are minimal as Brave already has a star-studded line-up with their last year’s wildcard pick, Jake Lintott being their leading wicket-taker. Southern Brave further bolstered their line-up by signing James Fuller as a replacement for Quinton de Kock who will miss the first game of the tournament due to South Africa duty. Later, when de Kock joins the squad, Fuller will serve as a replacement for Fin Allen for the rest of the BBL 2022 as Allen will join New Zealand’s touring squad for their away series against West Indies.
Hogan is one of the biggest signings in Thursday’s wildcard draft. Meanwhile, Richard Gleeson who was picked by England for their T20I series against India after having a remarkable season in the Vitality T20 Blast for Lancashire was signed by Manchester Originals who used their ‘right-to-match’ card to pick him after he withdrew from the tournament last year due to an injury.
Birmingham Phoenix signed Dan Mousley, the Warwickshire all-rounder who bats in the middle-order while Welsh Fire picked George Scrimshaw, Derbyshire seamer who has received a call-up to the England Lions squad for their series against South Africa next week. Surrey’s wicket-keeper batter, Jamie Smith will play for the London Spirit franchise. Ben Mike, Leicestershire’s all-rounder has been selected by Trent Rockets. On the other hand, Oval Invincibles signed Jack Haynes, the Worcestershire batter, as middle-order cover, and Northern Superchargers brought back Durham’s Ben Raine, who played four games for them last season after he was signed in the wildcard draft.
Northern Superchargers have also signed Michael Pepper as a replacement for Luke Wright who has pulled out of the Hundred 2022 to fulfill his coaching commitments with New Zealand. Each wildcard player will be paid £30,000, rounding off the selection process for 2022.
