The final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy was no less than a run-fest as two batters Ruturaj Gaikwad & Sheldon Jackson registered glorious tons however it was Sheldon’s century that proved useful as his side Saurashtra emerged victorious & won their second Vijay Hazare Title. Saurashtra displayed an all-round show & defeated Maharashtra by five wickets to win the sparkling Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 at Ahmedabad on Friday. Ruturaj tried hard to guide Maharashtra to their maiden title triumph but failed in his efforts.
Ruturaj’s ton guided Maharashtra to a decent Total
Put to bat first Maharashtra got off to a scintillating start with opener Ruturaj Gaikwad smashing Saurashtra bowlers right from the word go. After the early fall of wicket in the 5th over, Gaikwad joined hands with S Bacchav to stitch a 66-run stand. Bacchav scored 27 runs off 59 balls with three fours before walking back to the pavilion in the 25th over. Later Rituraj joined hands with Azim Kazi to stitch a fruitful 94-run stand for the fourth wicket. Ruturaj played an aggressor role by smashing Saurashtra bowlers all across the park. Kazi too supported him by amassing 37 runs off 33 balls. In the process, Ruturaj registered another noteworthy century & the duo together guided Maharashtra’s total above 190 run mark.
However, Unadkat gave Saurashtra a big breakthrough by dismissing Gaikwad through run-out. He went back to the hut after playing a blistering knock of 108 runs off 131 balls with seven fours & four sixes. Following him his partner too went back to the hut in the very next over, reducing Maharashtra to 205-5 in 44 over. Later Naushad Shaikh’s 31 off 23 balls & Navale’s 13 off 14 balls helped Maharashtra to end their innings at 249 in 50 overs. For Saurashtra Cirja Jani starred with the balls by returning with figures of 3-34. Unadkat, Mankad & Bhut too supported by scalping one wicket apeice.
Sheldon Jackson’s gutsy 133-run knock guided Saurashtra to their second title triumph
In reply, Saurashtra got off to a blistering start with Harvik Desai & Sheldon Jackson stitching a massive 125-run stand for the first wicket. The duo took Maharashtra’s bowlers to cleaners by smashing them all across the park. Soon their well-made stand was broken with Mukesh dismissing Desai for 50 runs off 67 balls with seven fours thereby reducing Saurashtra to 125-1 in 27 overs. Wickets kept falling for Saurashtra as none of their batters could leave a mark. Gohil (0), Vyas (12), Vasavada (15) & Perak Mankad (1) all got dismissed cheaply putting Saurashtra in a state of bother.
However, Jackson was going strong at the other end. He brought a crucial century to keep his side’s trophy hopes alive. He joined hands with Chirag & the duo stitched a 57-run stand to guide Saurashtra over the line in just 47 overs without further loss of wickets. Chirag stayed unbeaten at 30 runs off 25 balls with three fours while Sheldon stayed unbeaten at 133 off 136 balls with 12 fours & 5 sixes to guide their side to victory in Vijay Hazare Trophy Final. Choudhary (2-38) & Ostwal (2-20) were the pick of the bowlers for Maharashtra, however, they couldn’t defend their total thanks to Jackson’s blitzkrieg. This was Saurashtra’s second Vijay Hazare title triumph. They won their first title back in 2007.
