12 years back on August 18, 2008 Virat Kohli hailed victory in the Under 19 World Cup. It was the first ODI against Sri Lanka & Kohli opened up that match with his Delhi teammate Gautam Gambhir.
It wasn’t a great innings for a 19 year old boy who managed to score just 12 runs as India got bowled out for 146 runs & finally lost the match. But the journey which started on that day turned to be a great achievement today. The BCCI has congratulated the Indian Captain on completing 12 years in International Cricket & so did Kohli’s IPL team RCB.
“On this day in 2008, a young @imVkohli donned the #TeamIndia jersey for the first time and as they say the rest is history. Here’s congratulating #TeamIndia Captain on #12YearsOfVirat,” BCCI tweeted.
“From an ambitious young cricketer to one of the best batsmen the game has ever seen, it’s been one incredible journey!” tweeted RCB.
In the past 12 years, Kohli has crossed several milestones. He was an integral part of India’s World Cup-winning team in 2011, the Champions Trophy-winning team in 2013 and the team that climbed to the No.1 spot in the ICC Test Rankings.
Kohli is also the second highest scorer for India in ODIs with 11,867 runs just behind his mentor Sachin Tendulkar’s 18,426 runs & has scored 70 International Centuries after his mentor Tendulkar’s 100 International centuries. He is the fastest cricketer to reach 10,000 runs in ODIs.
Kohli was termed as India’s test Cricket Captain in 2015 & ODI, T20I Captain in 2017. He has 7,240 test Runs registered on his name & holds the record of the most double hundreds among Indian batsmen in test cricket. Virat will next be seen into action with IPL 2020 which will commence in UAE from 19th September & Finals are on 10th November 2020.
