India’s spin all-rounder Krunal Pandya is all set to set his foot in County Cricket after signing a deal with Warwickshire Club for the Royal London Cup. Krunal has not been named in India’s T20I & ODI squads for England’s white-ball series thus he is free to show his prowess in County Cricket. Krunal will join Washington Sundar (Lancashire) and Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex) in the domestic 50-over competition, which starts on August 2.
The inauguration of the Hundred 200 tournament has reduced the popularity of the Royal London Cup as the majority of England’s top white ball players have made themselves unavailable for County Cricket as they prefer playing in the Hundred instead of County Cricket. As far as Indian players are concerned, according to the BCCI policy, active Indian players are not allowed to play any T20 league other than IPL. Thus the three Indian players would be available for the entire season of the Royal London Cup 2022 which is a boost for the tournament’s standing.
“Krunal is an incredible signing for the club, and I’m delighted to welcome him to Edgbaston,” Paul Farbrace, Warwickshire’s director of cricket, said. “Krunal will bring a wealth of international experience to a team that will be desperate to do well.”
“Due to our impressive T20 performances, we will lose players to the Hundred, but that’s always going to happen to successful teams,” Farbrace added. “We believe this is a fantastic opportunity for our young players to learn from Krunal and I’m sure he will be excited to help them develop their skills too.”
After signing a deal with Warwickshire, Krunal said, “I’m really excited to get the opportunity to play county cricket and to join such a historic club as Warwickshire. Edgbaston is a special place to play cricket and I can’t wait to call it my home. I hope I can play my part in a successful 50-over campaign with the club.”
Around 10 players of the Warwickshire squad would feature in the Hundred tournament as the domestic wildcard draft for the Hundred 2022 is slated to be held next week. With Warwickshire’s experienced players featuring in the Hundred tournament, the vacant spots will be filled by young players who would be eager to prove their prowess in county cricket & for them Krunal will act as a mentor.
