WBBL 2022-23: Melbourne Stars signs Jemimah Rodrigues

WBBL 2022-23: Melbourne Renegades on Tuesday announced the signing of Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues for the upcoming season of the Women’s Big Bash League.

Jemimah Rodrigues is excited to join the Melbourne Stars line-up for the WBBL 2022-23. Speaking about the signing Rodrigues said,

“I am super excited to be a part of the Stars family. I’ve been told that I’m the first-ever Indian to sign for the Stars and it is my honor to do so,” Rodrigues said in an official statement released by Melbourne Stars.

“Melbourne has always been my favorite city in Australia and I can’t wait to get back there!” she added.

General Manager Blair Crouch said her signature is a landmark day for the club, “We have a huge following in India and to add a player of Jemimah’s quality to our squad is a huge coup for the club. I’m sure Jemimah will quickly become a fan favorite and we look forward to seeing her as part of the Stars Family in WBBL|08,” Crouch said.

A Glimpse of Jemimah Rodrigues’s Stand-Out Performances So Far:

A swash-buckling performer at the top order, Rodrigues has scored 333 runs at a strike rate of over 116 during WBBL 2021. Rodrigues who made her debut for India back in 2018 against South Africa has represented the country in 58 T20Is & 21 ODIs. In 58 T20Is, Rodrigues scored 1273 runs, at a strike rate of 111.56. She had also featured in two ICC T20Is World Cups for India, including the T20 World Cup 2020 final at the MCG.

Rodrigues was an integral part of India’s Commonwealth games 2022 campaign where India ended their stint with a silver medal. She managed to finish the tournament as the highest run-scorer for her team with 146 runs off five fixtures. On the domestic front also she didn’t fail to leave a mark. She scored 243 runs in six matches during the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy at an average of 60.75 and a strike rate of 167.58 and carried her excellent form into the Women’s T20 Challenge.

After the Commonwealth Games, Jemimah Rodrigues also featured in the Hundred 2022. However, her stint was reduced due to a wrist injury. During the Hundred 2022 opening match, Rodrigues smashed 51 off just 32 balls as an opener against defending champions Oval Invincibles. Notably, Rodrigues also became the first Indian to be signed by the Melbourne Stars franchise which is truly an honor for her.

Jemimah Rodrigues will join the Stars line-up after completing her National Duty in the Asia Women’s Cup 2022 to be played in Bangladesh from October 1 to 16. She is currently in the UK with the national team, where India will play three T20Is and as many ODIs against England starting on September 10.
