West Indies on Friday announced a 16-member squad for the T20I tri-series in South Africa. And veteran all-rounder Stafanie Taylor has been included in the squad for the T20I Tri-series.
The series featuring India will act as a preparatory ground for both India & West Indies for T20 World Cup 2023 starting on February 10 in Africa. Taylor has been out of action for a while after suffering an injury in an ODI fixture against New Zealand at North Sound in September. As a result, she missed the entire ODI series against England which the hosts swept all because of a poor show by West Indies Women. In order to boost their middle order, West Indies Women’s team has also brought in middle-order batter Britney Cooper into their squad who had last featured for West Indies in September 2021
Speaking about the selected squad, lead selector Ann Browne-John said that their batting attack proved ineffective in front of England’s lethal bowling attack. So in order to bolster the batting order they have recalled some experienced batters who will add more depth to the squad.
He further said that the team had made commendable performances during the ODI series in South Africa in early 2022 & they will take the entire experience to face South Africa & India in tri-series & then face them again at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup also in South Africa.
West Indies has also added experience to their fats bowling department by including Shamilia Connell and Shakera Selman who have recovered from minor injuries to get a place in the squad. The tri-series involving West Indies, South Africa & India will be played from January 9 to February 2.
West Indies Women are placed in Group 2 along with England, India, Pakistan & Ireland for T20 World Cup 2023. They will begin their campaign on February 11 against England in Paarl.
