WI vs AUS 1st T20I: A swashbuckling show with the bat produced by Russell along with stunner bowling performances from Obed McCoy & Hayden Walsh guided West Indies towards a nervy 18 runs win over Australia in the first T20I.
With this scintillating win, the hosts have taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. Australia won the toss & sent Windies to bat first. Batting first, West Indies brought 145 runs on the scoreboard & then with restricted bowling wrapped up Australia for 127 runs to win the match.
Andre Russell displayed his exhilarating batting stint to score a massive 51 runs off 28 balls which comprised of five scintillating sixes. Russell scored his maiden century for West Indies in the T20I format of cricket. Chasing an average target of 146 runs, visitors got off to a poor start as they lost their Captain Aaron Finch in the second over. Mitchell Marsh & Matthew Wade tried to steady Australia’s innings by stitching 38 runs partnership for the second wicket. However, they couldn’t get successful as Andre Russell struck & removed Wade in the fourth over.
Then came Josh Phillipe to support Marsh on the crease but unfortunately Phillipe was dismissed for just one run reducing Australia to 53/3 in the sixth over. Marsh completed his half-century & stitched a brief stand with Moises Henriques for the fourth wicket. Australia was gearing for the win till the 11th over however Walsh & McCoy ran through their batting order to leave them reeling for runs. Walsh & McCoy scalped quick seven wickets to reduce Australia from 108/4 to 126 all out in 5.4 overs.
McCoy produced a match-winning spell by scalping 4 wickets in 26 runs. He was awarded as the “Man of the Match” for his outstanding show with the ball. Leg spinner Walsh was playing his first match of the season in which he took 3 wickets for 23 runs. Earlier Andre Russell’s blistering knock of 53 runs off 28 balls helped Windies to reach a total of 145 runs in 20 overs. West Indies got off to a bad start by losing three wickets for just 35 runs. It was the spell-bounding bowling efforts by McCoy & Walsh that helped the hosts clinch a gutsy win over Australia.
