India Women vs Australia Women: The Cricket Australia National Selection Panel on Wednesday announced an 18 member squad for the upcoming Commonwealth Bank Series against India. What comes as a shocker for cricket fans is the absence of Aussie’s bowlers Megan Schutt & Jess Jonassen. The duo will miss the homes series against the Indian Women’s team that is slated to commence in September.
India Women will lock horns with Australia Women across all three formats with the schedule including three ODIs, a day & night test match at the WACA Ground & three T20Is. Stella Campbell & Georgia Redmayne have been included in the squad while Maitlan Brown returns to the squad after an extended break due to a hamstring injury.
“ We are really confident with the squad that we have selected & are pleased to be able to include Stella & Georgia as well as welcoming back Maitlan who has missed a large amount of cricket through injury”, National Selector Shawn Flegler said in a Statement. “Stella is another young fast bowler to have come through the pathway & adds another layer of depth to an emerging pace-bowling group.”
Shawn Fleger also highlighted that Schutt & Belinda Vakarewa requested the selection panel to not include them in the squad due to personal reasons, whereas World’s top-ranked ODI bowler, spinner Jess Jonassen has been ruled out of the squad after due to a bone stress injury in her tibia.
“We are fully supportive of the requests from Belinda & Megan to not be considered for selection & will continue to work with them to ensure they have appropriate support. As the leader of the bowling attack, Schutt Megan’s absence will provide the opportunity for someone else to play the type of role she has so well over a lengthy period”, said Flegler.
“Jess Jonassen is another big loss & will be disappointed to miss out, but she’s another one that’s worked hard over the winter & a long summer ahead, her focus will be to get herself right with a lot of cricket left in the season”, he added.
Speaking about Jonassen’s injury, Australian team Physiotherapist Kate Beerworth said that Jess has developed some right shin pain during the pre-season. She has also been diagnosed with a bone stress injury in her tibia & thus will be unavailable for the upcoming series against India. The series against India will commence with the ODI series on September 19 while the one-off test will be palyed on September 30.
