Women’s Asia Cup 2022: ICC releases the schedule of the Marquee Event

The Asian Cricket Council President, Jay Shah announced the full schedule of the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 on Twitter on Tuesday. The marquee event is slated to begin on 1st October with Bangladesh locking horns with Thailand. India will also begin their campaign on the same day against Sri Lanka while they will face arch-rivals Pakistan on October 7.

The tournament will see seven teams competing in a round-robin format where they will play six matches each, with the top four teams qualifying for the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be held on October 13 and the title clash on October 15. The Women’s Asia Cup has been played in the T20 format since 2012. The inaugural edition of the Women’s Asia Cup had eight teams divided into two groups & semi-finals to be played in it. While the last two editions (2016 & 2018) had fewer teams & only the top two teams were indulged in a battle for the finals spot.

India Women will battle it out for their Seventh Title Win

India along with Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka & Thailand were already qualified for the event on the basis of their Rankings. Joining them are Malaysia and UAE, who made it to the tournament through the qualifying event – the ACC Women’s T20 Championship.

It is for the first time since 2018 that Bangladesh will host a Women’s tournament. All the fixtures of the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 will be played in Sylhet – at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium and Sylhet Outer Cricket Stadium. Hosts Bangladesh are also the defending champions as they edged out six-time champions India in a tense final in 2018.

However, India is the most successful team in the Women’s Asia Cup history having won the tournament six times & this year they would be eyeing to bag their seventh Asia Cup title. Notably, the Women’s Asia Cup was last played in 2018 with the 2020 edition getting postponed due to COVID-19.
